Nash Scholars

Regina graduated from high school six years ago and left the Solita group home. She attends Cal Poly Pomona, is studying for her Bachelor of Science degree in zoology and hopes to become a veterinarian. Regina goes to school full time, has a car and attends all meetings required by the independent living program. She is able to meet the responsibilities of her life; however, she still needs assistance with her rent and monthly groceries.

Nathan graduated from high school in 2005 and left the East Mountain group home that August. He attends Pasadena City College part-time and works part-time at Ability First serving disabled adults. He hopes to transfer to California State University in Los Angeles or Northridge by the end of next year to pursue a degree in criminal justice and possibly join the police force. Nathan lives with Anthony in an apartment in Pasadena.  This year Nathan has taken responsibility for paying his own utilities, got his driver’s license and purchased a car in the spring.  He still needs assistance, however, with his monthly rent and groceries.

Anthony also graduated from high school in 2005, left the East Mountain group home and lives with Nathan. He attends Pasadena City College part-time and hopes to have his AA completed by spring 2009. Anthony works full-time at a pharmacy in Pasadena; however he still needs assistance with his monthly rent and groceries.

Michael attends Pasadena City College part-time where he plans to pursue a degree in deaf studies and sign language. After graduating from high school in 2008 he left the East Mountain group home and recruited a foster home headed by his best friend’s mother. Michael is employed full-time at Sparkletts and is studying to get his driver’s license. He hopes to emancipate by the end of October and then will need assistance with rent, groceries and utilities.

Kytana graduated from high school in 2007 and left the Solita group home to live with her special friend/mentor who offered permanency by opening her home to Kytana. She attends Pasadena City College part-time and is looking for employment. Unfortunately a hang-up with her birth certificate has delayed her ability to fully emancipate and live on her own. Kytana needs assistance with rent, educational supplies and transportation.

Cynthia left Solita to live in a Five Acres’ foster home she recruited herself. She graduated from high school in 2007, attends Pasadena City College and works part-time at Lake Avenue Church. She plans to transfer to California State University in Northridge in the spring of 2009 and hopes to live on campus. Cynthia is doing well and accepting adult responsibilities; however, she needs assistance with her monthly rent, transportation, books and groceries.

Zabrina left the Solita group home in 2004 and moved into a Five Acres foster home. She had a difficult year but regrouped and is doing much better now. She is the proud mother of a three-month-old baby boy, is taking parenting classes and has returned to a Five Acres foster home. Zabrina graduated from high school in 2007 and attends Pasadena City College full-time in cosmetology school. She needs assistance with transportation, books and groceries.

Lydia is Michael’s sister. She left the Solita group home in April 2008 to live with a Five Acres foster family in La Crescenta. She recently graduated from Marshall High School and is now taking 17 units at Pasadena City College toward a degree in sign language and works part-time at Starbucks. Lydia needs assistance with books and transportation until she emancipates in July 2009, at which time she will also need assistance with rent and groceries.

Maria left the Solita group home in 2005 to live in a Five Acres foster home. She recently graduated from high school and attends Pasadena City College. She plans to emancipate in August 2009. At that time she will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation

Razmik currently lives in a Five Acres group home. He graduated from high school in June 2008 and plans to emancipate by January 2009. He attends Pasadena City College and wants to pursue a career in health to become a masseuse. Once he emancipates, he will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.

Christopher lives in a Five Acres group home. He graduated from high school in December of 2007, attends Pasadena City College and works part-time as a life guard at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. Christopher plans to emancipate in January 2009 and will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.

Sally was a long-time resident of Five Acres’ residential treatment center and the Solita group home. She currently lives in a DCFS foster home but plans to emancipate by December 2008. At that time she hopes to move back to Pasadena and attend Pasadena City College. If she can graduate from high school by December 2008, she will be accepted into our independent living program and will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.

Darryl currently lives in a Five Acres group home. He will graduate from high school in June 2009 and currently has a GPA of 3.5. Darryl’s dream is to attend USC beginning with an undeclared major and ending with a degree in English and Liberal Arts. Darryl plans to emancipate in August 2009 and will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.

Travette emancipated in September of 2008. Until 2004 she lived at the Solita group home but left for a county foster home. Travette graduated from high school in 2008, attends Pasadena City College and is looking for employment. Travette will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.

Pedro moved in with his best friend whose mother became his foster motherfter emancipating from the group home program two years ago.  He is currently employed part-time at Aaron's Brothers and is receiving mental health services through Five Acres’ foster care clinician.

Youth in Five Acres Foster Families

Ana lives in a Five Acres foster home in Pasadena. She plans to graduate from high school in July of 2009 and to emancipate shortly thereafter. She hopes to attend Pasadena City College and will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.

Rayshelle lives in a Five Acres foster home in Pasadena. She plans to graduate from high school in July of 2009 and to emancipate shortly thereafter. She hopes to attend Pasadena City College and will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.

Samantha lives in a Five Acres foster home in Pasadena. She plans to graduate from high school in July of 2009 and to emancipate shortly thereafter. She hopes to attend Pasadena City College and will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.

Arcelica lives in a Five Acres foster home in Pasadena. She plans to graduate from high school in July of 2009 and to emancipate shortly thereafter. She hopes to attend Pasadena City College and will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.

Sasha lives in a Five Acres foster home in Pasadena. She plans to graduate from high school in July of 2009 and to emancipate shortly thereafter. She hopes to attend Pasadena City College and will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.

Larry lives in a Five Acres foster home in Pasadena, graduated from high school in July of 2008 and plans to emancipate by January 2009. He currently works at Perry’s Joint in Altadena and attends Pasadena City College. He will need assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.

Venise lived in the residential treatment center and graduated from high school in 2007. She currently lives in Pasadena, attends Pasadena City College part-time and works at Starbucks. With Five Acres’ guidance, Venise is developing a plan and direction for her future. She needs assistance with rent, groceries, educational supplies and transportation.
 
Melanie currently lives with her foster mother and plans to graduate from high school in July 2009. She is an excellent student, hopes to attend Pasadena City College in the fall of 2009 and currently is looking for part-time employment. She plans to emancipate in August 2009, at which time she
