Answering the Call

National Adoption Month is celebrated during the month of November and is a time to celebrate family and to bring awareness that there are approximately 129,000 children in foster homes waiting to be matched with an adoptive family. In 1976, the governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis, announced an Adoption week for his state. Later that same year President Gerald Ford proclaimed that Adoption Week would be celebrated nationally. As more and more states started to participate in Adoption Week it became clear that more time was needed for holding events and in 1990 National Adoption Week became National Adoption Month.
This year the theme for National Adoption Month is “Answering the Call – You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent. There are thousands of teens in foster care who would love to put up with you.” In addition to focusing recruitment efforts on teens waiting for a permanent family, this year there is a focus targeting the African-American community and finding homes for African-American children in care. In Los Angeles County African-American children in foster care are disproportionate to the county’s population. The Department of Children and Family Services in Los Angeles County is consistently looking for fost/adopt families who are open to parenting new born, African American males. Five Acres strives to find forever families for these children as well as for teens who wait for a family to call their own.
Five Acres received our adoption license in 2000 and since then we have finalized over 40 adoptions for our families. We welcome all types of families to apply to form their family through adoption. WATCH ADOPTION PSA VIDEOS
