Based Theories and Practices to Understand, Model, and Teach the Essential Principles and Techniques of Residential Treatment

AUDIENCE: Residential Treatment Supervisors and Senior Staff

DESCRIPTION: Residential care and other out-of-home placements are often seen as the last stop in shaping behaviors that are entrenched and difficult to treat.  In order to maximize time spent in these settings and provide the best quality of care possible, direct care staff who spend the most time with clients must be adequately trained. Yet, time and limited resources get in the way of this task. Therefore, this one-of-a-kind strength- based training has been designed to provide senior staff with the content and skills necessary to train direct care staff in the essential area of milieu therapy. The major components of residential care will be taught and demonstrated to promote, model and teach this material.

GUEST SPEAKER:  Charles Appelstein, MSW, has 25 years of experience working with troubled children and their families. Charlie provides training and consultation to residential, psychiatric, foster care and educational settings throughout the US and Canada. An award winning author, his first book, The Gus Chronicles: Reflections from an Abused Kid is used as a training resource in hundreds of child welfare programs and colleges throughout the US and Canada. His second book, No Such Thing as a Bad Kid: Understanding and Responding to the Challenging Behavior of Troubled Children and Youth was published in the spring of 1998, and has been enthusiastically endorsed by educators and child welfare leaders throughout the country.
