Survivors of domestic violence
are often paralyzed with fear and humiliation.

Domestic violence results in intense feelings of alienation,
confusion, and loss of power and control.

Last year, Grace Center served more than 800 family members at three locations in the San Gabriel Valley. Grace Center staff and volunteers provided a variety of services to survivors of domestic violence and their children. Grace Center volunteers collectively donated more than 3,500 hours of service last year.

  • A women is beaten every 15 second
  • 95% of all spousal abuse cases are women abused by their male partners
  • One in four pregnant women are beaten
  • Women are 10 times more likely to be victimized by domestic violence
  • 2 million women a year report violence against themselves

Because of these statistics, Grace Center refers to domestic violence survivors as women in this document. The agency's services are available to all domestic violence survivors – both male and female, English and Spanish.

 Process
When a potential client contacts Grace Center, a staff member or trained volunteer talks with her over the phone to assess in what ways Grace Center can be of assistance. The client is invited to Grace Center a relaxing, comfortable surroundings with plenty of toys and outdoor play area for children. A volunteer supervises the children while the client meets privately with an advocate to assess the client's particular situation.

Legal Services
Grace Center's legal advocate helps in the preparation of documents, court proceedings, and accompanies the client to court as advocate and support person for restraining orders, divorce proceedings, and other legal documents. Grace Center also provides Spanish translation services as needed.

Child Assessments
Grace Center's child's therapist helps to assess how the situation at home is affecting the children. Children living in a household with domestic violence often exhibit an increase in anger and depression. The therapist also helps identify and connect the client with child therapy services.

Food, Shelter, Supplies
Grace Center can supply some food, clothing, and toilet articles and also advocate in locating low-cost housing. Referrals are made if emergency shelter or additional resources are needed.

Twice a Victim
One of Grace Center’s newest Spanish-
speaking clients was referred after being arrested for defending herself. The client lived with her perpetrator for eight years. He abused her physically, emotionally, verbally and sexually. The client was court referred to Grace Center after being identified as the actual victim in the criminal case.

Grace Center has helped the client considerably by protecting her and her children from the perpetrator and receiving support through the program’s empowerment groups. The client is currently receiving legal advocacy and support as she advocates for herself in her legal proceedings. Referrals have been made to Five Acres on behalf of the children for individual counseling.

The client shared the following, “Grace Center has been my angel. I didn’t know help like this existed for women like myself that have been abused. I didn’t know how to identify the abuse. Now, because of the empowerment groups, I am stronger.”
